31 January 2017

Let's pretend for an hour that the world isn't utterly screwed.

Bubblegum Lemonade - The Great Leap Backwards
And it does feel like we're trying to recreate the 1930s all over again. This is the title track from the album released late last year, one of my just-getting-round-to-it pile. And it's a big pile at the moment.

Team Picture - Back To Bay Six
A 5-piece from Leeds out on Leeds label Come Play With Me who can be relied on for the good stuff.

Real Estate - Darling
Off the LP In Mind which comes out on March 17.

Featured album: Tin Machine
Tin Machine
Amazing
I've been meaning to do this one for a while, especially since Bowie's death. It's a period that never got due recognition, but that Bowie said saved his career. That being that instead of doing what other people wanted, it was a return to making what he wanted and sod anyone who thought otherwise. He also credited Reeves Gabrels, guitarist and co-writer, with opening up his more experimental side which went on to define Bowie's late period.

Fews - LaGuardia
A new track from the London-by-way-of-Sweden band. Came out just over a week ago and is bloody splendid.

Deny All Robots - Crash
Speaking of geographical oddities. Lichfield via Detroit. This is the title track from the EP that came out last November. Yes, another off that big pile.

The Nightingales - The Divorce That Never Was
The renaissance of The Nightingales continues with a new track from the EP Become Not Becoming.

The Cowboys - She Wants To Be French
It does seem appealing right now, in fairness. These are from Ohio and is off a self-titled LP that came out last November. And the pile reduces again.

Heldinky - Arms
From Bangor in North Wales. This is off their debut LP Miles To Go Before I Sleep.

Featured album: Tin Machine
Bus Stop
It was worth revisiting this. It's not Bowie's best work, but it's not anywhere near as bad as was made out. What it represents in his career arc, however, is priceless.

Neon Waltz - Dreamers
These are from Caithness. And they're rather good.

Voodoocuts - Jazzaround
Because what we all need now is a jazzed up version of House Of Pain's Jump Around.

Blanck Mass - Please
From the third LP from Fuck Buttons' Benjamin John Power's side project, World Eater. Tip top.

And I'll try to reduce that pile next week.

Hello again

Splashh - Waiting A Lifetime
The Australo-Londoners have a new LP coming in April, this being the title track.

Penelope Isles - Cut Your Hair
The first track from Art Is Hard records new singles club. Subscribe, get a single a month on a postcard. Genius.

Those Unfortunates - Welcome To Woodberry Down
I like the style of these guys. Definite elements of Biscuit. This was released last week.

Featured album: Daft Punk - Homework
Daftendirekt
Revolution 909
It's 20 years old. Good grief. 20 January 1997 saw Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo launch themselves into our consciousness and into robot suits. It still stands up.

Los Campesinos! - 5 Flucloxacillin
Another track from the forthcoming 6th studio album Sick Scenes. A reflection on a life on medication.

Diet Cig - Tummy Ache
New track from the New Yorker's album Swear I'm Good At This which is out on April 7.

Husky Loops - Fighting Myself
These are from London, a three-piece, and gaining a following. Easy to see why.

Angelic Milk - Gingerbread House
Going back a bit with this one. These are from St Petersburg and this is off the album Pale which came out at the end of 2014.

Julian Cope - As The Beer Flows Over Me
From a new LP of drinking songs, titled Drunken Songs, which is out now. Classic Cope.

Featured album: Daft Punk - Homework
Da Funk
Probably the most recognisable track from it. And came with that video with the bloke in the dog head.

Biscuit Mouth - Kenneth The Lampooner
Noisome Derby duo return with Hot Change, out now. Splendid stuff.

The Courtneys - Tour
To Canada for this one, Vancouver in fact, off the album II which is out on February 17.

Riviere - New Cancer
And we finish in Toulouse. Their debut LP Heal came out last Friday. A bit good.

All being well, same time next week.

10 January 2017

Pip-pip.

Eight Rounds Rapid - I Like It
And so do I. It's been a while since the fantastic debut album Lossleader, but here's new stuff from the Essex boys. Tremendous.

The Darts - You Got Me
All-woman band from Arizona, this is off their debut, self-titled LP.

David Bowie - No Plan
A posthumous release on the occasion of what would have been his 70th birthday. The EP of the same name contains his last ever recordings. Still miss him.

Featured album: New Fast Automatic Daffodils - Pigeonhole
Get Better
Penguins
On the fringes of the Madchester scene, NFADs get overlooked a lot. This was their debut LP from 1990, coming a couple of years after forming. I just don't think they ever get the credit they deserve. They were good.

Piskie Sits - Put Right
New stuff from Wakefield now, via Wakey label Philophobia. This is off the album Stick And Twist which came out in November.

Neurotic Fiction - Generals
Another track from recent signing to Art Is Hard, the flip side to the double A single with Mediator on the other side.

Joel Gion - Tomorrow
The Brian Jonestown Massacre percussionist continues his own side-project. This is a non-album track released last month, though a new LP is coming soon.

Field Route - Come Back
New band from Manchester featuring past and present members of Horse Beach. This is off a self-titled EP which is well worth your time checking out.

Blaney - Winner
Staying in Manc environs, Blaney is from Salford and this is off the Urban Nature LP that came out last spring.

Featured album: New Fast Automatic Daffodils - Pigeonhole
Big
The biggest track off Pigeonhole here, it was probably their biggest single. And they've resisted the temptation to reform for a few quid in the revivalist scene, so more power to them for that.

High Rise Finale - Loneliness
Another track from the Biography Of A Lost Soul EP coming soon from this Barnsley collective.

Mega Emotion - OK Maybe OK
We've played these Norwich noiseniks a few times before. After several EPs, a debut album is coming, tentatively titled Move, Motherfuckers. This is a banger and a half.

Kink - Pocket Piano (Breakbest mix)
To Hungary next. Strahil Velchev is Kink and this is the closing track to the new EP Cloud Generator.

Alone - Your Eternal Adventures
And finally, the 52nd and final edition of James Reichelt's mission to make a record a week throughout 2016. Far, far more hits than misses among them too.

Doesn't look like I'm in next week. Week after yeah?
Toodles.

3 January 2017

New year, new you? Same show though.

Fightmilk - NYE
Never mind christmas singles, maybe new year singles is a thing that needs to happen more.

Hooton Tennis Club - O Man, Won't You Melt Me?
Merseysiders with another track from their LP Big Box Of Chocolates from last October.

Cattle - Caring
New to us, these are from Leeds. The album Nature's Champion came out on December 23.

Featured album: Vukovar - Fornication
O Superman
We've played stuff from this St Helens trio before, but the new LP, released on the 1st of January, is quite something. It's cover versions, but doing something quite different with them. Like this, a version of the Laurie Anderson classic. Uncategorisable and spellbinding.

Phobophobes - Give Me Flowers, Give Me Grit
A festive treat from the London rockers, released December 21.

Desperate Journalist - Resolution
The lead single from the album Grow Up, their second, which is out in March.

Super Paradise - The FC
From Milan, but now based in London, this is off the album Quençebo which came out in November.

Grey Hairs - Serious Business
The title track from the new LP out on January 13.

Exam Season - Everything Is Salted Caramel
Well, it is isn't it? Released last month on the Art Is Hard label.

Yak - Harbour The Feeling
Another track from the album Alas Salvation which came out last spring. Still bloody marvellous.

Featured album: Vukovar - Fornication
Eisbär
A Grauzone record this time, one that's been covered hundreds of times, but never quite like this.

High Rise Finale - Disarray
A new project from friend of the show Matt Bailey of the Salient Braves, this time in conjunction with producer Neil Ritchie and singer Dani. Find more here.

Deadbeat - Sky Hearse
The Toledo producer with his new album Thumbknobulist. Something to do with gaming, I think.

Optical - Shape The Future VIP
A track from the Save Fabric album. And because I don't play enough drum and bass.

Alone - False Narrative
The 51st track from the project to record and release one track per week in 2016. I'll have the last one next week.
