31 May 2016

Hello again.

Brawlers - Day Job
Leeds punks with a new EP coming on July 1 called the Black.

Bivouac - Sweet Heart Deal
'90s rockers from Derby back with a new record. A double-A 7" is out on the 16th of July.

Lunar - Gonna Get You Down
The second single by a new band from Manchester. It's a very Manchester sound. Out on June 3.

Featured album: The Stranglers - Rattus Norvegicus
Sometimes
Goodbye Toulouse
This week we feature the 1977 debut album from the pun outsiders. Punk happened at just the right time for The Stranglers whose sound didn't fit easily into a niche. A bit older, wiser (maybe), than their contemporaries, the songs were a lot more developed, especially Goodbye Toulouse which is about Nostradamus's predictions of that city's fall. The Sex Pistols just didn't have songs like that.

Meatraffle - The Bird Song
Saw these supporting the Fat White Family and was blown away, especially by this track which they've just put out.

Loose Meat  - Edge Of Love
The first single from their debut, self-titled LP out on June 3. Like the xx but not boring.

Exploded View - No More Parties In The Attic
Another self-titled debut LP, this time from Mexico, albeit with a German singer.

Fat White Family - Tinfoil Deathstar
The new single from their second album Songs For Our Mother. Out last Friday.

John Metcalfe - Wrapped feat. Rosie Doonan
Multi-instrumentalist Metcalfe teams up with former Crybabycry singer Doonan to make wonderful music. The EP is also called Wrapped and is out now.

Cass McCombs - Opposite House
From New York and with an LP out in August called Mangy Love.

Featured album: The Stranglers - Rattus Norvegicus
(Get A) Grip (On Yourself)
One of their better known records, chronicling their lives in a squat.

M Craft - Chemical Trails
Dreampop from LA-based Martin Craft. The LP Blood Moon is out on June 17.

Alone - Lonely Tourist
Delightful electronica from Cardiff, as recommended by our closing artist this week.

Factory Floor - Dial Me In
New track from their forthcoming second album. 25 25 is out on August 19. Excited much?

Dementio13 - 4am Sun
And finally, a lovely track from one of our favourite artists. This is off April's Dead Of Night album.

Here's that on YouTube:

and Soundcloud:

and we'll have another go next week.

24 May 2016

I'm going to rattle through these. Chain came off on the way home, see.

5 Go Mad - Ginger Beer
Pompey punks not taking themselves too seriously, the album is Lashings And Lashings Of 5 Go Mad.

Life - Rare Boots
Brothers from Hull with a new single. Bit good.

Psycho Comedy - One
Definitely psych-ey, this is their debut single. From Liverpool, I wonder at the influence of the annual psych fest.

Featured album: The Damned - Damned Damned Damned
Neat Neat Neat
I Feel Alright
Britain's first punk LP. New Rose is 40 years old now. I cannot imagine the splash it made, being quite unlike anything else. Still makes an impact now.

The Parrots - Let's Do It Again
From Madrid and newly signed to Heavenly, this is their new one.

Esper Scout - Gaps In The Border Fence
Based in Leeds, this is out on Friday. Which is pay day, so you should get it.

The Hotelier - Piano Player
The new LP, their third, is out on Friday. Goodness is the title.

Bugeye - Disco Dancer
Modern disco from London. The EP is Never Let You Go and it's due in July.

Afterbloom - Duh
Not got much on these other than they're from Telford and that I doubt I've played a Telfordian band before.

Slow Club - Ancient Rolling Sea
A new LP is due later in the year, but that's just lovely, down tempo and calming. It'll do until we get the album.

Featured album: The Damned - Damned Damned Damned
New Rose
Couldn't not play it.

Alke - Indigo
From Reno, these are Audrey Karrasch and Jameson Flood. That's all I got, other than I really like that one.

Cobby and Litten - Tinder Surprise
Something different now. Steve Cobby is ex of Fila Brazillia among other things and here he teams up with author Russ Litten to make the LP My People Come From The Sea which you should get. Like a toned down Sleaford Mods, it's along the lines of Malcolm Middleton collaborating with David Shrigley or Joe Hakim and Ashley Reaks. There's a movement here somewhere.

Vessels - Are You Trending?
One of my favourite bands with a new single. Came out last week and it's a belter.

17 May 2016

Held over from last week because I had a raging sore throat that was definitely not radio friendly.

Bent Shapes - What We Do Is Public
Perky stuff from these Bostonians. Wolves Of Want is the album.

Meilyr Jones - Strange/Emotional
Bowie-esque. This guy is going places. The album, his debut as a solo artist, is 2013 and very highly rated.

Red Cabin - Follow Me Home
The solo project of Jonathan Foster of Long Island who has songs that don't fit the idiom of his other band, Snowday.

Featured album: Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip - Angles
Beat That My Heart Skipped
Letter From God To Man
The 2007 debut from these two left a big impression. There's lyrical intelligence and banging beats and it's great. One of those that I keep going back to.

Parquet Courts - Dust
Always nice to get new stuff from these - a band that could only possibly come from New York. Human Performance is the new LP.

Martha - Goldman's Detective Agency
More sunshiney pop from Durham town Pity Me. The LP Blisters In The Pit Of My Heart is out in July.

Lower Slaughter - Hands
Raucous stuff from Brighton, the title track off their EP which came out in February.

Mugstar - Time Machine
Gorgeous krautrocky stuff from Liverpool. This is off the album Magnetic Seasons which came out in March.

The Coathangers - Down Down
More than a little element of psych about this. They're from Atlanta and the LP Nosebleed Weekend came out on February 29.

Black Mountain - Florian Saucer Attack
The Jagjaguwar label is normally a reliable badge of quality and this is from them. IV is the Vancouver band's first LP since 2010.

Featured album
Thou Shalt Always Kill
This had been doing the rounds a lot before it's release. I remember it on YouTube from way back before seeing it on a pub jukebox in York just before the LP came out. It's a modern classic.

The Dandelion Set - Judy Switched Off The TV
Bizarre and sublime, this is from their debut LP A Thousand Strands 1975-2015 and featuring the vocals of Alan Moore, writer of V For Vendetta and Watchmen.

Malcolm Middleton - Steps
Another new one from the LP Summer of '13. Which is great. More than a hint of Gary Numan about this one.

NZCA Lines - Two Hearts
These have been played plenty, but I got a new appreciation for their art after seeing them support Teleman. The LP Infinite Summer came out in January. It's good.

Krywald and Farrer - Spoon-Billed Sandpiper
A club banger to finish from this London duo. The EP Top Pocket Persies came out in March.

More next week.

3 May 2016

I refuse to believe it's May already.

Eat Fast - Stammer
Sleazy lo-fi rock from a mystery outfit formerly known as Eat until a clash of names forced a change. New single, out now.

Frankie Cosmos - Sinister
Greta Kline - daughter of Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates, fact fans - records as Frankie Cosmos and does it very pleasantly. Her latest LP is Next Thing and came out early in April.

Iyesaya - Monster
Tackling mental health stigma in song is Dorset's William Dop in the guise of Iyesaya.

Featured album: Recordiau Prin - Iechyd Da
Stuart Kidd - If Fingers Were Xylophones
Nat Lyon - Freckles
Iechyd Da is a compilation of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci songs recorded by other Welsh DIY artists. Incredibly, it's free! And well worth your time downloading. Gorky's made some great records and all the artists featured on this LP treat those songs with love and care. Tremendous work by all involved.
Get it from bandcamp.

Wild Billy Childish and CTMF - A Song For Kylie Minogue
More of the customary brilliance. I do hope those stories are true and Beck is a nob and Kylie is lovely. The album SQ1 is forthcoming. Consider it ordered.

Kingsley Chapman and The Murder - Ghost
Another new track from one of our favourites at the moment.

Kaninchen - Shown On The News
Huddersfield artist using vocal loops to create her sound. The name means rabbit in German.

Keel Her - Fantasy
A cover of a Paul Nova song from Rose Keeler-Schaeffler taken from a split 7" with Claire Cottrill.

Something Anorak - Shake Fist At Sky
Another split 7", this time with Gorgeous Bully.

The Bin Bags - Church For Psychopaths
Featuring Keel Her again, this is off the LP The Bin Bags which came out late March.

Featured album: Recordiau Prin - Iechyd Da
Bad Mood - Waking For Winter
Lovely interpretation of one of Gorky's best.

Seazoo - Telephone Jones
More Welshness from the EP Jumbo.

The LimiƱanas - Garden Of Love
To the lovely city of Perpignan now. The new LP Malamore came out a couple of weeks ago and features Peter Hook on bass and vocals.

Tea Street Band - Feel It
Marvellous stuff. Their second LP is due out later in the year and this will feature.

Nathan Melja - No, No, No
Title track from the new EP from the Parisian producer which is due out on May 13.
